Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
